Battle for the Soul of Canada is a carefully woven book that incorporates Canadian history, religion and the personal memoirs of Rev. Ed Hird.

"It's the kind of book you can access in a couple of way," Hird said. "One of my passions behind the book is a love for BC and Canadian history."

He said he hopes that readers will believe there is hope for Canada's future after reading the book.

It's meant to inspire Canadians to believe in the future of our nation," he said. "There are a lot of Canadians who are cynical and depressed about our future."

But Hird believes with such a great national history and freedom-filled future, they should be optimistic.

"If you talk to Canadians, their greatest value is freedom," he said. "Democracy is rooted in this passion for religious freedom. The second greatest value of Canadians is they want relationships. Canadians want more than independence. They also want intimacy and relationship. I believe the key to relationship is at the core of our roots in the love of God and the love of our neighbour."

Hird is a long-time reverend who has spent 20 years preaching on the North Shore. As a result, the book is rooted in religious overtones and includes the history of his congregation.

While he touches on prominent biblical figures, he also includes the history of many Canadian pioneers, including nine examples of how they made Canada a better place.

"I weave that all in(...), he said. "It's a kind of experiment, but people say that it worked."

Hird will be signing books at Indigo Books in North Vancouver (1025 Marine Drive) from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday March 24th.
